Julia
Youthful, timeless and adored in Catalonia
Name of the Day ·
Number two in Catalonia, top ten in Brazil and loved far beyond. Julia wears its meaning very lightly indeed.
There is a lovely irony at the heart of Julia. It means youthful, yet it is the kind of name that never seems to age. It suits a baby in a bonnet, a student with a rucksack and a grandmother with strong opinions about the garden, all without changing a single letter.
Julia has Catalan origins, and Catalonia has clearly taken that to heart. But the name has never been one to stay at home. It has packed a light bag and made itself welcome on just about every continent, with the easy confidence of a guest who always brings exactly the right present.
So close to the top spot
Julia was the number two girls' name in Catalonia in 2024, which is about as close to the top as you can get without a podium. Brazil isn't far behind in its enthusiasm, ranking Julia number 8 in 2022, and France had it at 17 in 2024.
Further afield it is still going strong: number 47 in Canada, 66 in Mexico City, 73 in Argentina and 108 in the United States. England & Wales is the quiet one, with Julia at 223, which means a little Julia growing up here would have a name everyone knows but surprisingly few classmates share. Best of both worlds, really.
Ju, Julinha and a very busy lunch table
Julia's nicknames have a lovely, sunny lilt. Ju is short, snappy and impossibly cute on a lunchbox. Julinha is the more affectionate, sing-song version, the sort of name that is basically a hug in word form. Both give you somewhere to go when the full name feels too formal for bathtime.
The sibling names that pair well with Julia tell the same warm story: Lucas, Beatriz, Gabriel, Mariana and Pedro. Line them up and you can practically hear a happy, noisy family lunch going on in the background, with someone asking for more bread and nobody passing it.
From the big screen to the page
Julia also has an impressive roll call. Julia Roberts is an American actress, and Julia Gillard was Prime Minister of Australia from 2010 to 2013. In fiction, Julia is a character in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, while Julia Carpenter turns up in Marvel Comics.
Literary, political, cinematic and superheroic: few names cover that much ground. And yet Julia never feels as though it's trying too hard. It simply turns up, looks elegant and gets on with things, which is exactly what you want from a name that will have to handle everything from nursery to job interviews.
It's also wonderfully easy to live with. Three syllables, no tricky spelling, and a sound that seems at home in just about any language you throw at it.
So, is Julia on your list? If so, you are in very good company, particularly if you happen to live in Catalonia. Choosing a name is a glorious, maddening process of whittling down, arguing, making up and changing your mind again at three in the morning. But a name that means youthful, and somehow stays that way forever, is a very persuasive candidate indeed.
